The Hinterlands Rock Canyon Climbing Guide

The Hinterlands offers solid sport climbing on quality sandstone with routes spanning from mellow 5.7s to burly 5.13 projects. The South-Facing Wall gets sun most of the day making it perfect for cooler months, while the West-facing Wall provides afternoon shade during summer sessions. It's a straightforward approach with well-bolted routes that'll keep you busy whether you're working on your first 5.10 or pushing into double digits.

Classic Routes

The must-do lines that define The Hinterlands experience. These routes see traffic for good reason – they represent the best movement and rock quality the area has to offer.

Routes

Beginner Routes (5.6–5.9)

Perfect for building confidence on real rock or warming up before harder sends. The South-Facing Wall has most of the mellow terrain with bomber holds and straightforward movement.

Routes

Intermediate Routes (5.10–5.11)

This is where The Hinterlands really shines. Plenty of variety in the 5.10 range with some quality 5.11s to project when you're ready to step it up.

Routes

Hard Routes (5.12+)

The steep stuff lives mostly on the West-facing Wall. These routes demand solid technique and power, with Phobos standing out as the area's crown jewel for those operating at the sharp end.
